Oliver Leon Porter

Oliver Leon Porter (he/they) is an ESL teacher, writer, and poet.

In 2013, they won the Canadian University Press John H. McDonald   • Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Opinion Writing category for their column That Transsexual Guy (2011-2013). He was also nominated for the Diversity award for his article   • “Where are the Gender Neutral Bathrooms?” In 2019, they won the Prix d’Excellence Pédagogique du Réseau LCI Éducation for their teaching practice. He graduated from McGill University with a Masters in Teaching and Learning in 2023.

His writing practices centers around two key points: mythology and haiku. They explore the missing moments in major mythological tales. He searches for the supernatural in ordinary neighborhood haiku. He always seeks a way to queer what’s in plain sight.

He loves tea, cross stitch, and walking. They are currently a member of the Tolkien Society, The Troth, and Haiku Canada. They live in Montréal / Tiohtiá:ke, the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) nation.
